FAO and OECD workshop – preparation for RIO+20 – Greening the Economy with Agriculture Initiative GEA

FAO and OECD workshop – preparation for RIO+20 – Greening the Economy with Agriculture Initiative GEA

5 – 7 September, Paris – FAO and OECD workshop – preparation for RIO+20
To prepare for the RIO+20 summit FAO launched the GEA initiative, which focuses on enhancing nutrition and food safety. The purpose of the initiative is to recognize how food production affects the ecosystem and to appropriately shape agriculture, forestry and fishery policies. In a two day discussion, the FAO – OECD workshop focused on the draft document that will be published before the RIO+20 summit. This document deals with four interlinking elements: 1. food availability (influences of climate change, loss of biodiversity, decline of wooded area, energy consumption, water); 2. food access (access to land – gender equality, right to a healthy environment – use of pesticides, fluctuations in food prices, competition between bio-fuel and food); 3. stability of food systems (price fluctuations, development aid) and 4. food consumption (influence of transport policies, availability of infrastructure, eating habits of the developed world, local production). Part of the workshop focused on questions of synergy between policies: developing green work positions and the potential of agriculture to create energy. Emphasis was also placed on global governance needed to maintain biodiversity and face challenges resulting from climate change.
